Drunken drivers face extra fee
Palatine officials on Monday voted to implement a $250 administrative fee for motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, possession of controlled substances and possession of more than 30 grams of cannabis. Under Palatine's old vehicle seizure and impoundment ordinance, offenders had to pay only towing and storage fees. There were 223 arrests for DUI in the last 12 months, which would have generated $55,750 in assessed administrative fees for the village. Several surrounding communities have similar programs. If motorists are cleared, the money is returned.
