Gurnee OKs new parking guidelines
Reacting to periodic complaints, the Gurnee village board has approved a law specifying the types of commercial vehicles and equipment allowed to park outside in residential neighborhoods.
Mayor Kristina Kovarik said village staff worked more than a year to assemble the new ordinance. There were public hearings and other feedback opportunities for residents before approval was granted this week.
"We're giving plenty of time before we start issuing tickets," Kovarik said. "We're giving them nine months lead time."
Under the ordinance, specific definitions are provided for commercial equipment and vehicles. For example, a vehicle weighing more than 11,501 pounds is considered for commercial use. Gurnee police would be able to quickly know the weight by running computer checks of license plates or vehicle identification numbers.
Heavy machines that perform demolition or construction functions qualify as commercial equipment. Trucks with certain bed modifications will not be allowed on a home's driveway or residential parking lot. Commercial trucks and equipment may be stored in a garage.
Kovarik acknowledged there will be complaints about village government intruding on the rights of private property owners. However, she added, the rights of a majority of residents will be protected now that police now have an ordinance they can use to enforce the commercial vehicle and equipment parking. She said the village is addressing one of the top resident complaints.
"The look of a neighborhood influences property values," Kovarik said.
