A day we should never forget

As we prepare to commemorate "The day which will live in infamy," I want to commend Lloyd Stover and Jim Prather for their Veterans Day ceremonies at their respective schools.

On Nov. 11, American Legion Post 680 and AmVet Post 91 were invited to participate in Veterans Day ceremonies at Central Middle School and Prairie View Elementary School.

Mr. Stover arranged a beautiful program at Central Middle School, including our traditional presentation of the colors and a solemn flag folding ceremony. At Prairie View, our presentation of the colors was followed by a patriotic presentation by each of the five grades. Mr. Prather had all of his 650 students involved in this wonderful tribute to our veterans.

Some schools shut down on Veterans Day, giving their students a day off, to sit in front of their TVs or computers, and give very little thought to the heroes of previous wars.

As we remember the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, we must painfully realize that more than 1,000 of our veterans die every day.

It is for this reason that we applaud Mr. Stover and Mr. Prather for giving their students these lessons in patriotism, and we thank them for allowing us to be a part of their ceremonies.
