Chimney fire damages Aurora duplex unit

One unit of an Aurora duplex sustained approximately $25,000 worth of damage Thursday morning, largely to the exterior, from an apparent chimney fire, authorities said.

No one was injured, but a woman and her three children have been briefly displaced by the fire reported at 10:30 a.m. Thursday on the 1400 block of Andover Drive

The Aurora Fire Department said the damper in the fireplace was still closed as wood was burning, apparently causing heat to build up and ignite the wood-framed chimney box above.

Because the fire was not immediately apparent inside, it burned for some time before it was detected and the fire department was called.

The five firefighter units that responded had the fire under control within 15 minutes, officials said.

The other unit of the two-story duplex was not damaged.
