Caterpillar cuts ties with some contract workers

PITTSBURGH -- Caterpillar Inc. has started cutting ties with some contract workers in an effort to lower costs amid the global economic slowdown.
In recent days, the company says it notified agencies that employ the workers in the Peoria, Ill., area, where it is based. It did not specify how many workers would be affected.
Company spokesman Jim Dugan says similar reductions already have been made in North Carolina and Europe. He says the Peoria workers perform tasks that range from factory work to office duties.
Caterpillar is the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment. It employs about 112,000 people, excluding contract workers.
