2nd Grayslake trustee running for mayor

Another Grayslake village trustee says he wants to replace Mayor Timothy Perry, who isn't seeking re-election in April.

Trustee Ron Jarvis announced Wednesday he'll be in the mayoral derby next spring. Jarvis joins Trustee Rhett Taylor in angling for the post Perry will depart after eight years.

Perry said he backs Taylor as his replacement because he's most qualified. Jarvis said not having Perry's support is fine by him, because the mayor hasn't done much for Grayslake.

"That's why I'm running," said Jarvis. "He (Taylor) is just hand-picked by the mayor."

Jarvis, 49, was elected to the Grayslake village board in 2007.

If he becomes mayor, Jarvis said, he'd push for transforming the village's downtown into an entertainment and restaurant area so stores don't have to face intense competition whenever a planned mall is built on the old Lake County fairgrounds at routes 45 and 120. Jarvis said he wouldn't mimic Perry's zeal for residential development.

Taylor, 39, said he wants to expand Grayslake's tax base while keeping a small-town feel. Taylor has served six years on the village board over two terms, with other stints on the plan and economic development commissions.
