Forecasters issue Winter Weather Advisory
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for northern Illinois this afternoon. The alert is in effect through midnight.
According for forecasters, the storm will reach the Chicago area by this afternoon, bringing snow and colder temperatures by late afternoon and early evening.
The snowfall, which has already started, will hit its peak in the area during the evening rush hour, making travel slow and hazardous, forecasters say. Accumulations will range from 2 to 4 inches in the Chicago area, with the higher totals near the Wisconsin state line.
Temperatures, which were in the mid-30s in the morning, will fall into the upper-20s as the storm arrives. The lows for tonight will be in the teens after midnight with a 60-percent chance of more precipitation. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
The National Weather Service forecast for Thursday calls for a chance of flurries, mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. West northwest wind around 10 mph. There's also a chance of more snow Friday.
