Four lane plan is right route to future

The Route 120 bypass project is intended to relieve east-west traffic congestion in central Lake County. The Nov. 12 open house showed the final four contenders for the "character" of the bypass to be two types of four-lane boulevards and two types of six-lane highways. People, government officials, WAKE UP! Things are changing faster than we realize - just read the newspapers. Look at the state of the automobile and airline industries. We have to move away from "bigger is better" to "less is more sustainable." We must scale our activities to the resource realities of the future and not pretend they are limitless. In short, we have to live within our means. An economy based on the incessant use of an automobile to get anywhere or do anything is not a sustainable future. We need effective public transportation, not more expressways. We need localization, not globalization. With this in mind, the four-lane boulevard concept with roundabouts at intersections and underpasses at railroads is the only option of the four that makes sense for the future. This approach will not only ease our traffic congestion, but will also be easier on our eyes, ears and environment while fostering local business development. Look forward, not backward.
