Spigner soars to 7th

Vernon Hills native Robert Spigner reached the round of 32 match play for the first time in seven years Thursday in the CLR Carmen Salvino Scorpion Championship at BZ Hawthorn Lanes in Vernon Hills.

Spigner qualified in a roll-off on Wednesday in the tournament qualifying round. His success carried over into Thursday, when he soared all the way to seventh place with a pitfall of 3,103 and a 239 average through 13 games. The bowlers had one game left to bowl late Thursday.

Leading the men's field was Ken Simard of Greenville, Ohio, with 3,233 through 13 games. Missy Bellinder leads the women with a 13-game total of 1,463. Adrienne Miller of Buffalo Grove was in 10th with 1,236. The qualifiers will bowl nine games of match play starting at 11 a.m. today.

The field will be cut to the top 16, who will return in the evening for the second round of match play.

The top four bowlers advance to stepladder finals to be aired Sunday at noon on ESPN, along with the top two ladies of the PBA Women's Series.
