Huskies shot down in Great Alaska Shootout
Andre Murray and Phil Nelson scored 16 points each, Kyle Coston added 14 and Portland State scored the first 11 points of the second half to pull away for a 79-58 win over Northern Illinois in the first round of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout late Wednesday night in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Vikings, favored to win the Big Sky Conference, scored the final 4 points of the first half and surged to a comfortable lead behind an 13-2 run to begin the second half.
Nelson started the spurt with a 3-pointer, and his thunderous one-handed dunk pushed the lead to 46-32. Northern Illinois was scoreless until Mike DiNunno's free throws with 16:29 left.
Portland State (4-0) will face Hampton in the tournament semifinals today.
The Huskies (2-3), who play Alaska-Anchorage today, were led by Darion Anderson with 16 points.
Maryland 80, Michigan St. 62: Greivis Vasquez and Dave Neal each scored 17 points, and unranked Maryland (4-0) hustled its way past No. 5 Michigan State at the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Travis Walton led the Spartans (2-1) with 16 points.
Gonzaga 83, Okla. St. 71: Micah Downs scored 17 points, and Jeremy Pargo added 15 to lead No. 9 Gonzaga (3-0) past Oklahoma State in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Terrel Harris scored 17 points for Oklahoma State (4-1).
Tennessee 78, Siena 64: Wayne Chism scored 15 points to lead No. 12 Tennessee (4-0) to a win over Siena at the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Alex Franklin led Siena (2-1) with 17.
Georgetown 58, Wichita St. 50: Austin Freeman scored 18 points, and DaJuan Summers added 14 points to lead No. 21 Georgetown (3-0) over Wichita State (2-2) in opening- round action at the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. David Kyles led Wichita State with 11 points.
Wake Forest 75, CS Fullerton 69: Jeff Teague had 24 points to lead No. 19 Wake Forest (4-0) past Cal State Fullerton in the first round of the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Josh Akognon led Fullerton (2-3) with 24 points.
Arizona St. 84, Charlotte 56: Jeff Pendergraph had 23 points and 10 rebounds to help No. 14 Arizona State (4-0) beat Charlotte in the first round of the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Guard RaShad Coleman led Charlotte (1-4) with 14 points.
