Spigner rolls on at Vernon Hills
Local favorite Robert Spigner of Vernon Hills joined five others who advanced out of qualifying round of the CLR Carmen Salvino Scorpion Championship at Brunswick Zone Hawthorn on Wednesday in Vernon Hills.
Spigner and Ed Carter of Akron, Ohio tied for the final PBA member qualifying spot. Spigner won 243-220 to advance.
"It's good to be back home," said Spigner, who last made the field here in 2002 and had a spectacular run the year before that, missing the televised finals by one game as an amateur. "I really had a crowd behind me that was one of the biggest things."
Jason Poli, a 29-year-old from West Des Moines, Iowa, led qualifying with a 1,761 pinfall over a seven-game block for an average of 251.57.
Men's competition continues today with the qualifying Round of 64, cutting the field down to 32. The women's field begin today with its qualifying Round of 16, cutting the field down to 10.
