Geneva schools lauded
For the second year in a row, Geneva School District 304 has been awarded the SchoolSearch Bright A+ Award for academic excellence in education. It is given to districts where students' academic performance ranks in the upper 5 percent of Illinois districts based on the 2007 Illinois School Report Cards. Geneva is one of 60 school districts in the state to be recognized by SchoolSearch. There are 871 school districts in Illinois. District 304 also received this award in 2007, 2005 and 2002. SchoolSearch is an educational research and consulting firm that publishes online rankings of school systems to assist relocating families. This spring, the district also received from SchoolSearch the 2008 Bright Red Apple Award of Excellence. This award is given to school districts based on academic performance, pupil/teacher ratio, expenditure per pupil, educational level of teachers, and average teacher salary.
Oversee a library
Petition packets for running for Geneva Library trustee are available at the checkout desk on the upper level of the library, 127 James St. Three 4-year terms are available in April's election. Library discusses 'Our Lady'
Aurora Public Library will sponsor a Spanish-language presentation, "Our Lady of Guadalupe: More than a Religious Symbol" at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Main Library, 1 E. Benton St. Miguel Arias, theologian and author of the book "Saints of the Americas" will talk about the Lady of Guadalupe's apparition in Mexico, and Aztec and Christian beliefs and symbols to explain how her image has become not just a religious symbol, but representative of a whole nation's identity.
