Prospect shoots down St. Charles East

On any given night, the Prospect boys basketball team can pick a starter (or two or three) to have a solid night and score in double-digits.

On Wednesday against St. Charles East, three Knights produced a solid showing. Kevin Reed (20 points), Jason Lebeleijan (14) and Joe Latulip (13) led Prospect to a 67-58 win in the Saints' own 50th annual Thanksgiving Tournament.

"The nice part about this team this year is that all five guys on the floor can score in many different ways," Prospect coach John Camardella said. "With that, the type of offense we run allows creativity while also providing structure. We like it."

"They have great players," St. Charles East coach Brian Clodi added. "(Kevin Reed) is unbelievable... they make a lot of plays."

Zach Scott's basket in the opening minute was the only time the Saints (0-2) led. There were a pair of ties in the first half before Prospect capped the first half on a 10-2 run for a 24-16 lead at the break.

The Knights maintained a double-digit lead for all of the third quarter before St. Charles East was able to cut Prospect's lead to 44-37 after a 3-pointer from Matt Jurewicz with less than 7 minutes remaining in the game.

Prospect scored the next 6 points and once again got up by double-digits. The Saints got as close as 8 points three times in the final three minutes of the game, but could not go on one last run.

"We have to give Prospect credit. They played hard," Clodi said. "They play great defense... we have to learn to get better on defense. We gave up too many easy baskets and fouled too much."

"It feels very good to get that first win," added Camardella, whose Knights fell to St. Joseph in double overtime Tuesday.

Like the Knights, the Saints also had three starters score in double-digits - Kevin Senechalle (19 points, 11 rebounds), Jurewicz (16 points) and Scott (12 points).
