Soldiers have right to smoke if they want

I understand the concern of Dr. Fiore (Burt Constable column dated 11/11/08). Smoking does have consequences. Anybody who started in the 1960s or later are aware of the risks. Military personnel have a choice when it comes to smoking, yes or no.

Do they have the same choice when it comes to dodging bullets? Their choice is whether they enlist, or do not chose to serve.

If our men and women chose to defend the rights of our world, let us defend the choices they make. It is their choice if they smoke.

I remember people being scandalized when a photo appeared in the news, of a soldier, who had just completed a dangerous mission. Why the shock and dismay? Because he had a cigarette hanging out of his mouth! Focus on what is happening in the field. Concentrate on arming and protecting our brave soldiers, not removing one of the few ways the have to spend a few moments not worrying about the next ambush!
