St. Joseph pulls out OT victory over Prospect
There are very few ways to start a season that are more exciting than what Prospect and St. Joseph did in their season opener Tuesday night at the St. Charles East Thanksgiving Invitational.
The Knights and Chargers had to go to double overtime before the Chargers were able to pull out a 66-63 victory.
"I loved seeing some of our juniors step up down the stretch," Prospect coach John Camardella said. "Both (Joe) Latulip and Jack Redding down the stretch I thought played incredible."
Latulip hit a 3-pointer with only a few seconds remaining in the first overtime to tie the score at 57 and force the second extra period.
Latulip said it felt great to have Camardella call his number when the Knights needed a big basket.
"I know he has a ton of confidence in me from playing last year, and coming back with the experience," Latulip said. "It was just myself, having confidence in myself."
Latulip finished the game with 11 points, 9 of which came in the first overtime period.
Redding sank two 3-pointers in the second overtime to keep Prospect neck-and-neck with the Chargers and finished with a game-high 19 points before fouling out.
Jason Leblebijian added 12 points for the Knights and Kevin Reed had 10.
Forwards Mantas Dubauskas and Brandon Carr of St. Joseph each had 17 points. Each player totaled 9 points in the extra sessions.
Both teams play again Wednesday, which could be tough games because of the extra minutes played on Tuesday night.
"It (playing double overtime) doesn't help us, but they're young," Camardella said. "That's the great thing about tournaments, you get a chance to go again the next day."
