John Williams will replace Spike O'Dell on WGN

Opting for caution and continuity over risk, WGN 720-AM has named John Williams to replace the retiring Spike O'Dell as morning host, effective Dec. 15.

Williams has been with the station since 1997 and ascended to afternoon-drive host at the personality-talk outlet in 2000. Last year he was seemingly demoted to midday afternoons when Steve Cochran became afternoon-drive host, but now he gets the big gig as heir to the top-rated O'Dell, Bob Collins and Wally Phillips. Cochran will stay in place, and WGN-AM will name a replacement for Williams in the coming weeks.

Vice President and General Manager Tom Langmyer praised Williams as "a well-known, popular host ... known throughout Chicagoland and beyond" and "a great broadcaster deserving of this promotion."

"I'm thrilled to be the new host of morning drive," Williams responded, "but let's face it, there's no replacing Spike O'Dell. One thing that won't change is reliable news and fun, friendly smart conversation that Chicago can count on."

O'Dell's last show will be a live broadcast from 5 to 9 Dec. 12 at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 Campbell St., Arlington Heights. It will be open to the public.

John Williams, here broadcasting from Chessie's Restaurant in Barrington, will take over as WGN-AM's morning host. Bob Chwedyk | 2007
