South Elgin wins big in opener

South Elgin 71, Elk Grove 50

South Elgin's boys basketball team jumped out to a big lead in Monday's game against Elk Grove and was able to roll to a 71-50 victory in the each teams' first game of the 23rd Annual Chuck Mitchell Thanksgiving Tournament at Fenton High School.

The Storm had a good blend of quickness and size against the Grenadiers. Six6-foot-9 senior center Daniel Lopez and junior guard Tommy Childs each scored 20 points.

South Elgin was able to build a 41-24 halftime lead behind 14 first-half points from Lopez and 11 from Childs.

Childs was impressive in his first game as a varsity player, routinely being able to drive to the basket for layups in addition to sinking two three-point attempts. He served as South Elgin's sixth man and didn't even score in the fourth quarter.

"He's going to be a good player," South Elgin coach Chaz Taft said of Childs. "He's under control. He did a great job coming off that bench tonight and giving us a spark."

Elk Grove coach Anthony Furman called the Storm's quickness "outstanding."

"It showed because they broke us down at four different positions on the floor at any time," Furman said. "And then their pressure was outstanding and it translated into easy buckets for them."

Junior Donny Duschinsky's 15 points led Elk Grove, and he could have scored a lot more. But Duschinsky was fouled out of the game due to an error in the official scoring about halfway through the third quarter.

What should have been Duschinsky's third foul was called his fifth, and he was forced to sit out the bench for the remainder of the game.
