Hersey battles back for win over York
Hersey 58, York 52
The Hersey boys basketball team battled its way to a 58-52 comeback win over host York at its annual Turkey Tournament on Monday night.
Despite being outscored 21-9 in the second quarter and trailing by 7 at the half, the Huskies took control with a smothering defense and a vicious offensive attack.
Sophomore guard Connor Miklasz was absent much of the third quarter in foul trouble, but his return in the fourth sparked Hersey's comeback. He went to the line twice in the final three minutes after coming up with clutch steals and immediately drawing a foul. The sophomore scored 8 of his 10 points in the final quarter.
"I kind of laid off the fouls, but I still tried to play aggressively," Miklasz said. "We just got after them on defense. We kept on driving and drawing fouls at the end of the game."
The Huskies overcame a rough day at the free-throw line, where they shot just 10-for-20.
"I think if you counted minutes, York outplayed us for more minutes," Hersey coach Steve Messer said. "But I think our little bursts at times are what made the difference in the game."
York sophomore Will Sullivan tallied 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Sixteen of those points came during the first half alone. He was one of only two Dukes starters that didn't foul out of the game.
Up next for both teams is Neuqua Valley, which beat Michele Clark 79-32 to open the tournament. The Huskies will face the Wildcats on Tuesday, and York will get its shot at them Wednesday.
