Aurora man gets 72 years for murder attempt, chase

An Aurora man who shot three men and then led police on a cross-town chase two years ago was sentenced Friday to 72 years in prison.

The lengthy term doesn't include any additional time Cevin Y. Stanford, 26, might get if he's convicted of unrelated murder charges pending against him.

On July 4, 2006, Stanford and another man opened fire on a group of five men, striking three, ages 16, 17 and 18, authorities said. He and the other man then led police on a chase across Aurora, during which the guns used in the shooting were thrown from the vehicle.

Stanford was sentenced Friday by Kane County Judge Grant S. Wegner, who convicted him in April on multiple counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery and armed violence, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.

Stanford, who also faces murder charges in the May 2004 killing of James McClose, will be given credit for time served in the county jail while awaiting trial. He must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence.
