Dundee-Crown falls to St. Viator

St. Viator 59, Dundee-Crown 48

Trailing 36-14 at the half, the Dundee-Crown girls basketball team showed that it was not ready to throw in the towel, cutting the lead to as little as 7-points early in the fourth quarter before falling to St. Viator 59-48.

Down 43-16 two minutes into the third quarter, a Megan Fasanella shot from long distance would be a catalyst for the D-C offense, which followed Fasanella's success with a 14-2 run to gain groun on the Lions and conclude the third quarter 47-33.

"I told the girls at the half that we were simply outhustled early," said D-C coach Michelle Russell. "They responded to that. They didn't like hearing it. In the second half, they came out pushing and fighting, and they started attacking the basket."

Foul trouble late for St. Viator put D-C (1-1) on the line for six consecutive points to open the fourth, allowing the Chargers to cut the lead to eight points at 49-41. With 5:29 left to play, the Chargers got as close as they would when a Fasanella 3-pointer, her third of the night, made it a 51-44 game before St. Viator closed it out with 6 points from the foul line and the win.

Despite the aggressive second half play of the Chargers, St. Viator (1-1) remained on top with two girls reaching double digits.

Susan Hohenadel's consistency from tip-off until the final buzzer helped her lead all scorers with 23 points, including a 13-of-18 stint from the foul line.

Hohenadel was backed by Colleen Nolan with 13 points and 8 rebounds and Kelly Hendricks (6 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds). Bridget Urbanus came off the bench to add 9 points including a pair of baskets from behind the arc.

"Mary Colov (5 points, 8 rebounds) added timely contributions in the Lion victory.

Fasanella finished with 11 points for Dundee-Crown, while Melissa Summaria led the Charger lineup with 14 points, 12 in the second half. Jill Gantz (8 points, 5 rebounds) and Tori Scarpelli (6 points, 9 rebounds) contributed to a balanced D-C attack. Alex Lococo hit the boards hard pulling down a dozen rebounds.
