State DCFS racking up OT after layoffs

SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services says it needs child-abuse investigators working overtime to make up for workers it lays off amid budget cuts.

The Associated Press has obtained an e-mail in which the child welfare agency also wrote that it will lose 27 of 39 investigators at its Maywood office to layoff or reassignment.

A spokesman for the workers' union called the action "nonsensical."

And the American Civil Liberties Union fears layoffs will increase workloads in violation of a court order.

A DCFS spokesman hasn't responded to requests for comment.

More than 300 state workers will be laid off Nov. 30 because of Gov. Rod Blagojevich's budget cuts.
