Glen Ellyn house fire under investigation

Glen Ellyn fire officials are still investigating the cause of "very significant" residential fire that occurred early Sunday.

At 8:18 a.m., firefighters were called to 261 S. Kenilworth Ave., where a custom home was in the late stages of construction and was being built for a family.

About 30 firefighters were called to the scene, and they spent more than 2.5 hours putting out the blaze, said Craig Eldridge, public information officer for the village volunteer fire company.

The fire spread through the walls, and was very difficult do extinguish because the house was brick and there was little ventilation, he said.

"It was a fairly difficult fire," he said.

The house was unoccupied and there were no injuries.

Approximately two blocks were shut down so firefighters could stage 10 pieces of fire equipment at the scene, officials said.

The house was in the drywall stage, and the electrical wiring and boxes were installed but hadn't been turned on yet.

As of Monday night, the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force was still investigating the cause of the fire, and an exact damage amount had not yet been determined, Eldridge said.

Fire departments from Wheaton, Carol Stream, Oak Brook and York Center Fire Protection District assisted either at the scene of the fire or manned Glen Ellyn fire stations.
