The Safes put the power in power pop
The Safes, "Sight of All Light" (O'Brothers),
The Safes continue their winning streak with a new EP that solidifies their place in the Chicago garage pop pantheon. Comprised of three brothers and joined here by guest drummer David Suycott, the group leaves no room for experimentation, nuance or other arty antics. Frankie, Michael and Patrick O'Malley certainly have a way with bare-knuckled hooks, as this EP packs in an entire album's worth. In less than 12 minutes, "Sight" romps and stomps through five tunes, each with a distinct identity and energy to spare.
Highlights include shabbily melodic bopper "Greed," which splits the difference between The Kinks and The Queers, and "Troublemaker," the disc's longest track (at a whopping 2:40!) which vacillates between snotty classic punk verses and proto-metal choruses. There's something slightly ominous about "The Sky is Falling" and "Unlock the Mystery," something that adds a little welcome danger to the otherwise accessible proceedings. Too brief to bore, too tough to die, The Safes should thrill fans of local heroes like Local H and Material Issue. If they're alright, kids will like 'em, too.
