New lanes on Route 22
The south lanes of the Route 22 bridge over the I-94 tollway will be closed starting at 7 a.m. today. The through lanes will be shifted to the north side of Route 22 to allow for the demolition of the south lanes over the tollway. Temporary traffic signals will be installed to handle the reconfiguration. The plan is expected to remain in place until June 2009, and the project is expected to be complete by November 2009.

Scam warning in Meadows
Rolling Meadows police are warning of a duo of thieves attempting to prey on elderly people by pretending to help with household problems. In one incident, a man and possibly an accomplice stole a diamond ring and an emerald ring around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday from a woman at her home on the 0-100 block of Duxbury. A man knocked on the woman's door and told her his work crew hit a water line and he had to check her water. He led her to the kitchen and they stood at the sink with the water running for 10 to 15 minutes watching for discoloration. He spoke to someone on a walkie-talkie, then told her he had to check something and would be right back. He did not return, and the woman discovered her bedroom ransacked and the rings missing. Police said other residents around Campbell Street and Flicker Lane have been targeted by similar scams. A gray sport utility vehicle may have been involved, officials said.
