Lots of questions on Glenbard West plan
Glenbard High School District 87 is apparently seriously considering installing field turf and lighting at Memorial and Duchon Fields for Glenbard West. While we are not today either in favor nor opposed, we think that this decision deserves a bit more scrutiny than it has had so far.
Here are a few questions: What is the total cost of the project, and how will that cost be covered? Will a referendum be needed? What is the ongoing cost of operation, how does this compare to today? What is the life of the turf, how often does it need replacement? Will District 87 be installing turf at the other three high schools? If not, how will they explain to those who attend them why they don't deserve the same treatment? What affect will this have on hours of field utilization, and on traffic, noise, litter, and nuisance crime? Are the village of Glen Ellyn and the Glen Ellyn Park District aware of this project, have they looked at the effect on their own budgets and programs? What limits will the district place on the use of these fields and lights? Will they be rented to other organizations? What is the effect on Lake Ellyn and the associated stormwater drainage issues? What is the expected effect of the proposed turf on injuries for young athletes? And lastly, why has this not been more carefully studied and communicated to the residents of the district?
This proposal is apparently being pushed by a small number of residents who stand to benefit from the improved fields, and opposed by a likewise small number who live nearby and will be most affected by the change, or who are concerned about the cost. The school board needs to consider not only these small groups, but the needs of the entire district, and most of the district's residents have not been given adequate information and time to develop an opinion.
