Man charged with selling drugs in exchange for cash, video games

A 27-year-old Elgin man has been charged with selling cocaine to an undercover Elgin police officer.

James A. Westbrook, of 535 Barnswallow Way, Apt. C, was charged with two counts of delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, two counts of delivery of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of a controlled substance, according to a police report. He was arrested Thursday.

On Nov. 6, the undercover officer purchased 3.2 grams of cocaine from Westbrook in exchange of a video game system worth $429, the report said.

On Nov. 13, Westbrook sold 11.1 grams of cocaine for two video games worth $65 and $700 in cash, according to Elgin police.

The drug transaction on Nov. 13 took place using the air vent outside Westbrook's apartment building.

In court on Friday, Westbrook said he had spent time in prison before.

Police said Westbrook previously had been involved in both drug and street gang activity in Elgin.

His bond was set at 10 percent of $100,000.

He was unable to post bond and was sent to the Kane County jail Friday morning with a Dec. 3 court date at the Kane County Judicial Center.
