Carpentersville man faces DUI, weapons charges
East Dundee police said the driver of a 2009 Nissan appeared to be drunk as he was westbound on Route 72 early Friday morning.
When an officer pulled him over, he found evidence that the driver had unloaded his gun, according to a bond hearing.
James E. Garner, 27, of 2286 Woodside Drive, Carpentersville, was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol. He also was cited for failure to signal a turn and improper lane usage, police said.
Police spotted Garner's car shortly after 1 a.m. Friday and pulled it over after it crossed the fog line at the edge of the roadway three times.
According to a summary of charges read at his bond hearing Friday:
Police found a bullet in his right front pocket and a pistol under the driver's seat. Two rounds of ammunition were on the driver's-side floor and six more rounds of the ammunition were on the passenger-side floor.
Garner later told police he began removing the bullets from the pistol when he realized police were following him.
Police said his blood-alcohol level was .087 percent, just above the legal limit.
Garner had an Ohio driver's license. He said in court Friday, "I didn't know the gun law here."
He was unable to post a $1,500 bond and was taken to the Kane County jail to await a Nov. 19 court date at the Kane County Judicial Center.
