String quartet coming to Wayne

Northern Illinois University's Avalon String Quartet is scheduled to perform Sunday, Nov. 16, in the village of Wayne to raise money for local historic preservation efforts.

The concert, set for 4 p.m. at the Little Home Church by the Wayside, 32W128 Army Trail Road, is part of an ongoing series sponsored by the church and the Wayne Historical Preservation Society. Admission is $30, with seating limited to about 140.

"Of all the concerts we've had, we've packed the house every single time," organizer Carol Berger said. "Our whole goal is to provide for the community really talented musicians. Just the exposure brings a lot of awareness to what the community needs."

Funds raised at previous concerts have supported the relocation of a historic train depot and other projects.

Known for the intensity of its performances, the Avalon Quartet is considered one of the country's leading chamber ensembles, Berger said.

The group, currently in residence at the university in DeKalb, has performed at several world-renowned venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress, and has been featured on international radio programs.

For tickets, call Berger at (630) 584-7088 or inquire by e-mail at armbrust@ameritech.net.

The Dunham Woods Riding Club in Wayne also is offering dinner packages with the musicians for $30 a person.
