Hoffman Estates cops arrest man after report of gunshots near schools
Hoffman Estates police say a 31-year-old man fired a shotgun inside his home Wednesday near Conant High and Fairview Elementary schools.
Police Chief Clinton Herdegen said no students were in any danger, classes were unaffected and no injuries were reported. Police had notified the schools a precaution as they drove to the scene.
"We didn't know what we had yet," Herdegen said.
Brian Nigro, 31, of the 100 block of Arizona Boulevard, was arrested shortly after noon and later charged with unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said. Nigro was arrested without incident, police said.
Police continue to investigate but say the gun was fired during some sort of dispute. The reported gunfire was about a half a mile from Fairview and about a mile from Conant.
Police said they also questioned another subject in connection with the incident, but that person was later released without being charged.
Tom Petersen, spokesman for Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211, which includes Conant, said by the time police alerted school officials that an arrest was made.
Police said Fairview was secured for 20 minutes before officers give an "all clear" notification to school staff. Terri McHugh, spokeswoman for Schaumburg Township Elementary School District 54, noted Fairview has a closed campus. She said students were kept indoors during recess and P.E. classes Wednesday because of the rain.
Nigro is set to appear in court Thursday for a bond hearing in Rolling Meadows.
