Where does he get all those wonderful clothes?
Ever wondered how Secret Agent 007 can run down streets, beat up bad guys, fall through windows and still look mighty fine in his snappier-than-snappy suits?
Moviemaking magic.
And a large costume budget.
"We have the hero suit," Daniel Craig explained, "which is the one that fits and looks beautiful. We have maybe two or three of those, just so we've got spare ones."
These suits look impeccably tailored for Craig's pecs, and seem to be a bit too tight for all that Bondian physicality that goes on in his new movie "Quantum of Solace." Under intense interrogation, Craig spills the beans.
"In scenes where I'm jumping off something and landing rather heavily, I've got to wear padding," he admitted. So, clothing designer Tom Ford created special-cut suits that allow Craig to put padding underneath on his knees and elbows.
"Hopefully, you'll never notice," Craig said.
"Quantum" costume designer Louise Frogley revealed in the movie's press notes that Ford is responsible for Craig's dashing attire, starting with his custom-made suits, constructed from a special "mohair tonic" fabric.
"It's very difficult to find because it's a 1960s fabric," Frogley said, "and I'm quite sure Sean Connery would have worn it in at least one of his suits."
Craig wears a lot more suits in "Quantum" than his character appears to.
"In this film, there are fire sequences toward the end," Craig said. "They (the suits) are burnt and they're more burnt. In the end, you have about 10 to 12 of each suit. We have a collection of suits that are broken down - and there are stages that the suits are broken down."
The trick is for filmmakers to remember just how burned Craig's suit was in a particular scene so if they reshoot it, they can properly match his burned or broken-down suit.
"It's mind-numbing," Craig confessed. "But it needs to be done so we have continuity throughout the whole film."
Why should Agent 007 bother to look so good when he knows he'll probably be involved in a death-match before the day is done?
"I don't think he ever knows he's going to do action things," Craig said. "I think he dresses for the day and he dresses as perfectly as he can and whatever happens, happens. He doesn't think, 'Well, I won't wear that today because I might get shot!'
"I don't think that actually goes through his head: 'I don't want to wear that suit. I like that suit!'"
