Naperville-based OfficeMax to lay off 250 workers

Naperville-based OfficeMax Inc. said Thursday it plans to lay off 245 workers at its North American stores as part of its ongoing cost cutting measures amid a tough economy.

The company said in a statement that the reductions would save around $28.5 million with operational costs and severances.

"Challenging economic conditions require we take proactive steps to maintain a solid business position that will support long-term growth," Sam Duncan, chairman and chief executive officer of OfficeMax, said in a statement.

A company spokesman was not immediately available for further comment.

OfficeMax has been reorganizing recently and said it does not expect to have new retail store growth next year and delayed its store remodeling program until economic conditions improve.
