Pair deny Lake County cocaine charges

Two people arrested in Lake County with an ounce of cocaine pleaded not guilty Thursday in Lake County circuit court.

Diego Duran-Rodriguez, 23, and Maria Guiterrez, 22, both face mandatory prison sentences of six and 30 years in prison.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Fred Day said Duran-Rodriguez, of 909 Carriage Way, Elgin, and Guiterrez, of 1075 Valley Lane, Hoffman Estates, were under surveillance by agents of the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group.

The pair was in a car being driven by Duran-Rodriguez around 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 7 when the agents stopped the car for a traffic violation near Gurnee.

A search of the car revealed the ounce of cocaine, which Day said was worth approximately $700.

Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak scheduled a trial of the case for Jan. 5 and ordered both to appear in court Nov. 20. Both are free after posting $5,000 for bond.
