Sleepy Hollow cops, ease up on tickets

I wish to tip my hat to the Village of Sleepy Hollow for the way it runs its many traditional festivities throughout the year. Whether it's the 4th of July parade, fishing derby and fireworks or the traditional autumn bonfire and appearance of the Headless Horseman, Sleepy Hollow reminds us of what is possible when a community treasures its traditions and families. The Sleepy Hollow Service Club, in particular, which runs many of these events, is a sterling model of well-organized community volunteerism.

I wish the same could be said for the village's police department, which insists on harassing those who park at and support these events, or who merely try to park for residential parties. Despite the fact that "No Parking" signs are not posted along most village streets, parking tickets are slapped on vehicles with abandon and enforced unevenly, to say the least.

During this past weekend's bonfire, it was heartening to see a small town come together to celebrate the season. It was frustrating, however, to find police ticketing cars.

In my case, I approached a patrolman to point out that I had moved my car. He could not be troubled to look up, but instead greeted me with, "Talk to me!" Yes, I had to get ticketed by a guy who thinks he's Horatio on "CSI Miami."

Sleepy Hollow, you're a great place to visit, but unless you professionalize your police department, who's going to want to live there?
