Long Grove voters reject TIF in advisory vote
Long Grove voters overwhelmingly rejected the notion of establishing a tax increment financing district to aid downtown development, an idea unanimously supported by the village board in February.
The vote was advisory; the district is already in place.
Unofficial results show that with all eight precincts reporting and early voting accounted for, 2,237 voters said no and 1,426 said yes to the question. The vote totals did not include absentee or provisional ballots.
When the board created the district, a citizen group who said their opinions weren't taken into account decided to put the advisory item on the ballot anyway. Officials have said the vote would not change their minds either way.
"We still feel the same way we did before; we feel we did our due diligence," Village President Maria Rodriguez said. "You see the development going on at Aptakisic and 83 and the development to come is based on (the TIF). We felt it was the responsible thing to do."
