Democrats retain seats on sanitary district board

With 93 percent of precincts reporting, it appeared Democratic incumbents Frank Avila, Kathleen Therese Meany and Cynthia Santos would prevail over their six challengers to retain their seats on the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.

The Cook County agency is responsible for treating sewage and stormwater runoff.

Unofficial results place Avila, a retired civil engineer, in the lead with 25 percent of the vote. Santos received 22 percent and Meany received 21 percent. No other candidate got more than 8 percent. All results are unofficial.

The trio bested Republican challengers David Clearwater, Paul Chialdikas and Daniel Flores and Green Party candidates Nadine Bopp, John "Jack" Ailey and Rita Bogolub.
