Peoria elementary school damaged by fire

PEORIA -- Classes have been canceled Monday at a Peoria elementary school that was damaged by a weekend fire.

Fire officials say the blaze early Sunday at Thomas Jefferson Primary School caused about $250,000 in damage. No one was injured, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Officials say a passer-by saw flames in the school's windows and called authorities. Firefighters say the blaze had been burning for about 20 minutes when they arrived and damaged every classroom, the library and the gym.

Classes are set to resume Tuesday at a vacant school district building.

Parents have been notified of the fire via the school's emergency phone system.

The district says about 470 students are enrolled at Thomas Jefferson.
