Chicago woman crushed in chain-reaction crash

Chicago police say a South Side woman was crushed to death under her own stalled vehicle when it was rear-ended while she was looking under the hood.

A man was also critically injured in the chain-reaction crash Sunday afternoon on South Lake Shore Drive.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office says 48-year-old Ruthie Butler was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and an autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli says the vehicle behind Butler's car slowed or stopped, but it rear-ended her car when it was struck from behind by a third vehicle.

A man in one of the other vehicles was injured and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
