$110,000 damage in Hoffman Estates apartment fire

Hoffman Estates fire officials estimate that an apartment fire over the weekend caused $110,000 damage.

Fire personnel were dispatched to the second floor of a two-story apartment on the 1900 block of Kenilworth Circle at 10:30 p.m. Saturday and found smoke coming out of the building.

The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported. The residents of the apartment woke up to the smell of smoke and safely evacuated, fire officials said.

The department's preliminary investigation showed that the fire started in the apartment's living room.

Two smoke detectors were found in the unit but were not working. Also, there was no sprinkler system in the building, fire officials said.

Twenty-nine firefighters responded, including personnel from Elk Grove, Rolling Meadows and Barrington.
