Peoria police shoot man, say he fired at squad car
PEORIA -- Peoria police are investigating the death of a man killed by officers who say he opened fire on them with an assault rifle.
Police say officers were responding to a call of shots fired early Saturday when 27-year-old Demeteric Mobley shot at their squad car with a semiautomatic assault rifle.
Officers returned fire, striking Mobley several times.
Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says a preliminary autopsy shows the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.
No one else was injured.
Mobley's friends and family say they're shocked by the incident, which they have called out of character.
Police say the shooting is under investigation.
