Deputy cited in Carpentersville crash
A traffic citation was issued Friday for a Kane County Sheriff's deputy who rear-ended a vehicle with her squad car Thursday in Carpentersville, police said.
The crash, which happened about 4 p.m. on Main Street, sent both drivers to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with minor injuries. The deputy, Kimberly Zinke, 31, was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to police.
Zinke was driving a squad in the vicinity of 2 E. Main St. when she struck a vehicle in front of her, which had stopped for a pedestrian crossing the road, Carpentersville Police Cmdr. Tim Bosshart said.
"It's kind of a common problem down there. There's always people crossing the street," Bosshart said, noting nearby businesses. "Still, the first car was able to stop in time."
Lt. Pat Gengler of the Kane County Sheriff's Office said Zinke has worked for the department for less than a year but previously did police work in Kendall and Winnebago counties. He said the sheriff's office would conduct an internal review of the accident to make sure no policies or procedures were violated, as it does with any crash involving police personnel.
