WhirlyBall in Lombard expanding

WhirlyBall enthusiasts soon will have even more space to relax and watch live matchups of the unusual game or TV broadcasts of other sporting events.

The Lombard location at 800 E. Roosevelt Road, which has been open during a remodeling project, aims to unveil its improved and expanded digs in mid-November

"We'll have a fully loaded sports bar and grill," said John Krol, WhirlyBall marketing manager. "We are so excited to offer a maximized version of our other two facilities in the location that started it all. We can now accommodate even bigger and more elaborate gatherings."

WhirlyBall Amusements, which also has locations in Chicago and Vernon Hills, took over the former Oriental Buffet next door to expand its kitchen, bar and party areas. The expansion, which brings the facility to a total of 24,000 square feet, will allow for a more diverse menu that can cater to individuals and groups.

"Bigger is better," said Krol, noting the facility will have one-third more space. "The minute they (customers) walk in ... they'll see change."

More party rooms, party areas and meeting space were created during the renovation project. More seating, new washrooms and a new sound system also were added. The completed facility will have 17 new flat-screen, high-definition televisions and additional pool tables.

The expansion was spurred by a growing demand for group and party reservations at all three WhirlyBall locations, whose featured attractions are the WhirlyBall courts.

The game combines lacrosse, hockey and basketball with bumper cars. Two teams of five roll around a court in bumper cars, called WhirlyBugs, trying to score the most points by using scoops to propel whiffle balls at their target.

"You'll have a bang-up time trying to outscore the competition," the company Web site boasts. "WhirlyBall has caused great athletes of every stripe to laugh and holler their way to a crushing defeat."
