Cops issue warning after joggers attacked in Arlington Hts.
Arlington Heights police are investigating a rash of attacks on joggers after five woman were assaulted on Oct. 21 and another two were attacked on Sept. 19 near Thomas Street and Ridge Avenue.
Police believe the same young man - who probably wears a cast on his right wrist - is responsible. No major injuries were reported.
On Oct. 21, the five attacks occurred between 5:50 a.m. and 6:45 a.m., said Cmdr. Ken Galinski of the Arlington Heights Police Department. On Sept. 19, the man allegedly rode a bicycle and asked two women joggers for directions before attacking them, said Detective Joseph Pinnello.
In all seven incidents, the man approached the women from behind and tried to grab them around their upper body, according to police reports. All of the victims were able to pull away from the man, who then fled the scene either on a bicycle or on foot. No vehicles were seen in the area at the times of the attacks.
Victims told police the man is in his 20s and between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall. He has a thin build, short dark hair, dark complexion and wore dark clothes during the attacks. Several victims also recalled a cast on his right wrist.
Anyone with information should call Pinnello at (847) 368-5356.
In addition, police are reminding joggers of the following safety precautions:
• Be aware of your surroundings and have a plan. Know what you will do if a dangerous situation comes up.
• Always trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is.
• Look confident. Offenders tend to choose victims who look like easy targets.
• Walk with a friend or stay near a group of people.
• Always take a route you know best and stick to well lit, busy streets.
• Avoid passing stationary cars with running engines and people sitting in parked cars.
• Music headphones will prevent you from hearing trouble approaching.
• If a vehicle pulls up suddenly alongside you, turn and walk in the other direction. You can turn much faster than a vehicle.
