Funky, fun jewelry store expands to Geneva

While the deflated economy is hurting many retailers, Kellyn Machacek's whimsical jewelry business is growing.

"Our price points are good. People still need to buy gifts," said Machacek, founder of the four-year-old business. The entrepreneur has a shop in Plainfield at 11830-E S Route 59. She expanded to 32 W. Chicago Ave. in Naperville and just launched her first franchise location in Geneva.

The shops specialize in one-of-a-kind sterling and genuine gemstone jewelry for women, teens and even children. Jasper, pearls, bamboo, jade and hand blown glass are some of the materials shoppers will find in the jewelry boutiques. In addition to a wide assortment of earrings, rings and pendants, Baurbles by Maclyn also offers purses, watches, jewelry organizers and jewelry for little girls.

Items at the stores range in price from $3 to $400, but the average price is about $40.

"We have something to say thank-you for watching my dog to an anniversary present," Machacek said.

"There's something here for all women. We're great for gifts for someone else or yourself," said Michaela Frank, franchisee of the newest store at 507 S. Third St. in Geneva.

The stores have developed a loyal customer base. In fact, Frank started shopping at the Naperville boutique when it opened about three years ago.

Having four daughters, Frank knows what's popular. The girls assist in running the business. Frank and her husband Lyn, a pharmacist, have lived in Naperville for 23 years.

"I've always wanted my own business and this seemed like the perfect fit," Michaela said. "I watched the Machaceks. I liked their jewelry and the way they presented it," she added.

Founder Machacek, who grew up in Libertyville before moving to Plainfield for high school, has been working with jewelry since she was a teenager.

"In college, I worked for a small family-owned jewelry store," she said. She graduated from college with a degree in psychology, but enjoyed jewelry more. Machacek, 48, held positions at other jewelry companies, including in the corporate offices for Whitehall Jewelers.

She made her own custom jewelry from her home and then set out to create stores different from what you'd find at a mall. She said the 1,200-square-foot stores feature 22 display cases that are open.

"I wanted a place you could go to find all types - nice, fun and fine jewelry," she said.
