Galesburg man convicted in retrial for 2004 attack

GALESBURG _ A Galesburg man who had claimed he acted in self defense has been convicted of attempted murder and sexual assault in a 2004 attack.

Knox County jurors deliberated for four-and-a-half hours Monday before convicting 41-year-old Jerry Mabry for the second time.

Mabry's first conviction was thrown out over allegations of juror misconduct.

Mabry defended himself during his retrial and claimed the victim attacked him first.

He was convicted Monday of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated battery and unlawful restraint.

Knox County State's Attorney John Pepmeyer told WGIL he's happy with the verdict and that the amount of evidence made the case.

Mabry is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 17.
