Fire damages Naperville condos

A fire that damaged several units of the Royal St. George Condominiums likely was set off accidentally by workers using torches to remove paint from rain gutters, Naperville Fire Department officials suspect.

No one was injured in the blaze that was first reported at 12:22 p.m. The fire was mostly contained to one unit, said acting Assistant Fire Chief Dushan Budimir. However, several other units sustained smoke or water damage. At least one resident was displaced and will be staying at a hotel for some time, fire officials said.

The two-story white wood-framed complex at 1115 Royal St. George Drive is one of the city's oldest condominium complexes and was built in the 1960s next to Cress Creek County Club, Budimir said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in less than a half hour and left the scene at 2 p.m.

Firefighters from Bolingbrook and Lisle-Woodridge fire departments assisted.
