Downtown businesses get in the Halloween spirit
Fifth Third Bank in Lombard will be inviting young guests - regardless of whether they have a savings account - to make a withdrawal Saturday afternoon.
The catch is that the young customers must wear a costume and their withdrawals will be restricted to candy.
The bank is among more than 30 downtown Lombard businesses that are offering treats and games for children from noon to 4 p.m. as part of Lombard Town Centre's Spooktacular Saturday Halloween event. The Lombard post office and the American Legion also are participating.
Downtown businesses in other local towns also are feeling the Halloween spirit.
On Saturday, Oct. 25, in downtown West Chicago, children can trick-or-treat at businesses with pumpkins in their windows from 1 to 3 p.m. The activity is part of the Horribly Fun Halloween Happenings, which includes a costume parade and Spooky Trail presented by the West Chicago Park District, and a Halloween puppet show presented by the West Chicago Public Library.
Downtown Wheaton merchants are offering candy to costumed kids from 3 to 6 p.m., or while treats last, on Friday, Oct. 31. Ghosts and goblins should look for posters in participating shops' windows.
Glen Ellyn businesses also are offering festive activities Saturday, Oct. 25, that include a 10 a.m. costume parade, led by the Glenbard West High School marching band, and trick-or-treating from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Trick-or-treaters should look for signs in shop windows for participating businesses. The Chamber of Commerce also will offer face-painting, crafts and games for youngsters.
In Lombard, festivities will include not only safe trick-or-treating but also a petting zoo, face painting, arts and crafts, a Dunkin' Donuts Munchkin Walk and live music provided by Girl Next Door.
Lombard children can show off their alter egos during a 3 p.m. costume parade led by the Glenbard East High School Drum Corp. Afterward everyone can compare their creativity in Lucky Strike Lanes' Family Costume Contest at 3:30 p.m.
The brave can test their courage in the Spook House, sponsored by TR Knapp Architects. The doors will be open from noon to 4 p.m.
Visitors also have a chance to grab a gourd to carve at home later. Ultra Foods in Lombard is sponsoring a pumpkin giveaway at noon, while supplies last.
