Briefs: Property tax relief
State Sen. Michael Noland, an Elgin Democrat, will hold a town hall meeting on education funding reform and property tax relief at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Centre of Elgin. This will be an opportunity for voters residing in the 22nd District to speak with the senator on the subject of SB2288. A bill designed, among other things, to provide property tax relief in Illinois that is expected to be heard in the legislature in the near future. Ralph Martire of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability and Elgin Mayor Ed Schock will be featured guests. Members of local school boards and other elected officials are invited to be part of the panel for discussion. Candidates for office within the 22nd District are also welcome to attend and as time permits share their views on the issue. Due to seating limitations, preference will be given to District 22 residents. Community fundraiser
A group of Algonquin mothers is holding a community fundraiser Sunday to benefit Sammy Sanchez, a sixth grader at Algonquin Middle School who is battling leukemia. Her mother Eileen O'Mara died in July of breast cancer. The fundraiser includes dinner and a silent auction and runs from 4 to 7 p.m. inside the middle school's cafeteria. Proceeds will help cover Sammy's cancer treatments.
Chief's meeting
Elgin Police Chief Lisa Womack will hold her monthly Chief's Community Meeting at the Elgin Police Department at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, in the North Community Room of the police station. The topic will be matters of public concern. Feel free to e-mail any topics of community concerns or issues to elgin_pd@cityofelgin.org. The meeting is open to all residents of Elgin.
Online flu shot scheduling
The McHenry County Department of Health has created an online scheduling system for flu shot appointments (adults, children 9 years and older) at www.mcdh.info. Appointments can also be made by phone at (815) 334-4510 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Cost is $35; Medicare Part B accepted. The online scheduling system will be available 24 hours a day. Flu shot appointments for children 8 or younger should be made at the Children's Clinic by calling (815) 334-4536.
