Democrats care for country first, too
If the Republican Party is all about "country first," why does the Democratic candidate for president, Barack Obama, have an unprecedented number of supporters who are willing to turn off their TVs and get off their couches to campaign for him?
The GOP has somehow co-opted patriotism, but love for country is more than just waving a flag or wearing a pin.
Who is exercising their democratic rights and responsibilities more than the person who gives up nights and weekends to make calls and hit the streets to canvas for their chosen candidate?
On any given weekend this fall, you will find hundreds of Northwest suburbanites of all races, genders and socioeconomic backgrounds carpooling up to Wisconsin to get out the vote for Sen. Obama.
None of my friends who support John McCain have done a single thing that I'm aware of to demonstrate support for his candidacy.
I know a pair of 20-somethings who work full time and go to school, yet give up most of their free time and disposable income to organize for Obama.
Eighty-year-olds don tennis shoes and walk miles on Saturdays to stump for the Democratic candidate.
I submit that these people love their country no less than those who belong to the self-proclaimed patriotic party.
We shouldn't question the patriotism, wisdom or intelligence of people who believe differently than we do.
Let's agree to show respect to one another in spite of our differing visions on how to solve America's problems.
