Off-duty detective shoots robber
According to Chicago police, an off-duty detective shot and killed a convicted felon who police say tried to rob him.
The Cook County medical examiner's office said 44-year-old Sherrod Griffin was shot once in the abdomen Tuesday and pronounced dead at the Stein Institute.
Police said the detective, who they did not identify, was working on a house he owned in the Englewood neighborhood when he was approached by Griffin, who pointed a gun at the detective and demanded money. The detective responded by shooting the suspect.
Authorities said Griffin had several convictions on his record, including convictions for armed robbery, aggravated criminal hijacking and robbery of a victim 70 years or older.
A police spokesman said the Independent Police Review Authority is investigating and interviewing witnesses to the shooting.
