Looking backward to look forward
In reading Anne Krick's opinion of Sarah Palin as a runnning mate (10/2/08) it reminded me of a New York Times article of July of 1984, so let me quote The New York Times: "Where is it written that only senators are qualified to become presidents? Or where is it written that mere representatives aren't qualified? Where is it written than governors and mayors like Diane Feinstein of San Francisco are too local, too provincial? Presidential candidates have always chosen running mates for reasons of practical demography, not idealized democracy... What a splendid system, we say to ourselves, that takes little-known men, tests them in high office and permits them to grow into statesmen ... Why shouldn't a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?"
That Anne, was a quote from The New York Times after Geraldine Ferraro was chosen as the VP candidate in 1984. Maybe we have to look backward to honestly look forward.
